Deon Anderson’s 14-yard cutback TD won the game with five minutes, 14 seconds to go. A clutch fourth-and-8 catch by Josh Diaz on a pass from Randy Cianciotto kept the drive alive.
Cianciotto threw for 170 yards and ran for 81 and a score.
Gateway was penalized nine times for 100 yards in the first half, losing a 90-yard interception return TD to a block in the back.
The Panthers opened the scoring on University’s first offensive snap. Quaran Hepson knocked a fumble loose on a pass completion and Chase Smith scooped and scored from 30 yards out.
Less than four minutes later, Zach Smith took a toss sweep 68 yards to the end zone for a 13-0 lead on a fourth-and-one play that caught University’s defense bunched up. He finished with 142 rushing yards.
University stays on its borrowed home field at Deltona High for the fourth consecutive week for a homecoming Class 8A, District 2 opener vs. Seminole next Friday. Gateway will open 7A-6 play at home against St. Cloud.
