A year ago, Mira Costa surprised everyone by winning the Boras Classic. Now there should be no surprise that the Mustangs are on a roll once again.

Dylan Dennis got an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday night to help Mira Costa move on with a 3-1 semifinal victory over Orange Lutheran.

Junior pitcher Jesse Storey allowed two hits in six shutout innings. Orange Lutheran tied the game, 1-1, with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh before the Mustangs broke through in the eighth with two runs.

Scholarship papers for Reseda football player Ja'lanie Ellison to Wyoming
Scholarship papers for Reseda football player Ja'lanie Ellison to Wyoming (Alonso Arreola)

Standout defensive back/receiver Ja’lani Ellison of Reseda finally signed his scholarship papers with Wyoming on Friday.

It culminated a four-year campaign of Ellison and Reseda Coach Alonso Arreola to help him obtain a college scholarship. Ellison got his ACT score also on Friday, clearing the way for him to finalize his plans.

For Arreola, it was a celebration. He promised to do whatever he could to make sure college coaches were aware of Ellison, who ignored attempts to lure him away. He stayed for four years and helped the Regents achieve football success.

Windward vs. Mater Dei, 2 p.m. Charisma Osborne of Windward is the most exciting junior player in California. She plays defense, shoots from three-point range, drives, dishes and leads. And she has a great supporting cast. Mater Dei is a young team with a terrific future. The question is: Can the Monarchs win a championship a year ahead of schedule? The pick: Windward.
