It's the time to start getting a feel for quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs with seven-on-seven passing competitions beginning.

Gardena Serra is hosting a weekly Wednesday night competition beginning in May that will include Narbonne, led by QB Jalen Chatman. Long Beach Poly, which picked up Oaks Christian transfer Matt Corral at QB, is playing on May 3.

Serra will be breaking in a new quarterback.

Standout junior guard David Singleton from state champion Bishop Montgomery announced Thursday that he has committed to UCLA.

Singleton is a two-time All-Area selection by The Times.

Arizona was also recruiting Singleton, who teamed with Ethan Thompson to help the Knights win the Southern Section Open Division championship and state Open Division title.

A year ago, Mira Costa surprised everyone by winning the Boras Classic. Now there should be no surprise that the Mustangs are on a roll once again.

Dylan Dennis got an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning on Thursday night to help Mira Costa move on with a 3-1 semifinal victory over Orange Lutheran.

Junior pitcher Jesse Storey allowed two hits in six shutout innings. Orange Lutheran tied the game, 1-1, with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh before the Mustangs broke through in the eighth with two runs.

The Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks is doing something that some sports people might say is a sign the apocalypse is near.

This fall, for $35,000, you can participate in a "Personal Development Year." Athletes who are eighth graders can take a "gap year" and not jump right into high school.

The program will allow students to work on their athletics and academics before going into high school.

Shareef O'Neal, a 6-foot-9 junior at Santa Monica Crossroads, announced on Wednesday that he has committed to Arizona.

The son of Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal is known for his versatility and ability to shoot.

He played this season with Ira Lee, who will arrive at Arizona this fall.

The Battle of the Valley all-star basketball game for boys and girls is set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at L.A. Valley College.

City Section player of the year Devante Doutrive from Birmingham is among the players scheduled to play for the East team.

Cal-bound Juhwan Harris-Dyson of Heritage Christian and the Sierra Canyon group of Cody Riley, Remy Martin, Adam Seiko and Terrance McBride are on the West roster.
