Baseball: Three-way tie for first place in West Valley League

The West Valley League continues to produce one-run games, and now there’s a three-way tie for first place among Chatsworth (4-1), El Camino Real (4-1) and Cleveland (4-1).

On Wednesday, El Camino Real held on to defeat Birmingham, 4-3. Jeremy Polon threw a complete game. He struck out consecutive batters with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. In the seventh, Birmingham bunted into a game-ending double play with the tying run on third. Jake Selco, the ECR first baseman, threw out the runner at the plate trying to score after a sacrifice.

“He pitched through a lot of adversity,” El Camino Real Coach Josh Lienhard said of Polon, who overcame three errors. Dylan Hirsch went three for three.

Danny Hernandez and Niko Switalla combined to pitch Chatsworth past Cleveland, 1-0. Hernandez threw five innings and Switalla got the save. Sammy Villa allowed two hits in defeat. Matthew Parent threw six innings in Taft’s 4-3 win over Granada Hills. Jacob Davies had three hits for Taft. Anthony Patron had three hits for Granada Hills.

In the East Valley League, first-place Poly defeated Chavez, 5-0. Isaac Gutierrez struck out seven in a complete game. Joey Olvera went three for three. North Hollywood defeated Grant, 7-1. Ryan Ruiz struck out 15. Chris Lung had three hits.

Verdugo Hills defeated Arleta, 10-0. Marco Quintanar struck out five. Marco Toscano had a single, double and triple. Troy Richards, Eric Lopez and Ivan Gonzalez added two hits apiece.

In the Valley Mission League, Kennedy defeated Canoga Park, 15-1. Adrian Campos had four RBI. Sylmar defeated Reseda, 16-3. Mike Martinez had three RBI.
