Baseball: Kenny Brawner throws fifth shutout for Moorpark in league opener

Moorpark’s pitching staff has been very good this season, particularly left-hander Kenny Brawner. He threw a one-hitter on Wednesday, leading the Musketeers past Royal, 3-0, in a Coastal Canyon League opener.

It was the Musketeers’ fifth shutout this season. Brawner struck out six and walked none. He’s 3-0 with 19 scoreless innings this season, 21 strikeouts and zero walks. Connor Chapman and Matt Page had two hits apiece.

Simi Valley 5, Camarillo 3: Abbott Haffar had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Pioneers. Andrew Devine had a home run. Owen Sharts got the save.

JSerra 7, St. John Bosco 0: Chase Strumpf and Lyle Lin had two RBIs each and Collin Quinn threw 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball to help JSerra win its Trinity League opener at Angel Stadium. Johnny Kuhn struck out seven in defeat.

Esperanza 4, El Dorado 0: Josh Sedoff went three for three and Ryan Wilson threw six shutout innings in a Crestview League opener.

Oaks Christian 1, Calabasas 0: The Lions opened Marmonte League play with a win in eight innings. Carson Rudd allowed two hits in a complete game, striking out seven. Dane Morrow drove in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly.

Agoura 3, Thousand Oaks 2: Michael Weisberg struck out six in six innings and Ben Baird got the save in the Marmonte opener.

Westlake 4, Newbury Park 1: Bo Jelinek had two hits and threw a scoreless eighth, striking out two, to help the Warriors win in eight innings. Dillon Dirksen had two RBIs. Pudge Teobaldi threw out two runners at the catcher position.

Chatsworth 1, Banning 0: Tommy Palomera struck out 11 and threw a two-hitter to lift the Chancellors. Nick Henry’s home run accounted for the game’s only run.

La Mirada 0-7, Lakewood 1-0: In the first game, Matt Fields threw a complete-game two-hitter for Lakewood. In the second game, Shawn Dumser of La Mirada threw a no-hitter.

Bonita 8, San Dimas 0: Bonita (6-0) stayed unbeaten behind Nathan Schneider, who threw the shutout.

West Ranch 9, Golden Valley 0: Blake Baumgartner went four for four with three RBIs and Jason Drees added three RBIs for West Ranch. Dom Eberle threw five shutout innings.

Valencia 7, Hart 0: The Vikings opened Foothill League play by getting six shutout innings from Chase Farrell. Tyler Erne went three for four.

Saugus 8, Canyon 4: A six-run sixth inning helped Saugus win the Foothill opener. David Shier and Joey Mendez had two-run singles. Tony Jacob contributed two doubles.

Crespi 3, St. Francis 1: Taylor Dollard struck out nine in six innings to spark the Celts to a 2-0 start in the Mission League.

Loyola 3, Alemany 2: Riley Livingston contributed three hits and Holden Groff had a no-hitter for 4 1/3 innings to help the Cubs start 2-0 in the Mission League.

Harvard-Westlake 8, Chaminade 0: McCabe Slye threw a two-hit shutout for the Wolverines (1-1 in league). He struck out six. Leo Kaplan had three hits, Cameron Deere had a home run and freshman J.P. Corrigan added two hits.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2-9, Village Christian 0-2: In the first game, Hunter Greene allowed two hits in six innings. In the second of the Knights’ sweep, Colin Brophy went three for four, including a grand slam. Notre Dame is 7-0.

Sun Valley Poly 10, Grant 0: Sophomore Miguel Leal struck out five to lead the Parrots in an East Valley League opener.

North Hollywood 17, Monroe 6: Ryan Ruiz threw six scoreless innings and had a bases clearing triple in a nine-run seventh.

Bellflower 6, Sunnyside 2: In Arizona, Anthony Garcia went four for four.

Cleveland 4, Kennedy 0: Sam Villa (4-0) threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts and also contributed two hits. Anthony Rivera had two RBIs. Cleveland is 10-1.

Birmingham 7, Sylmar 3: Jon Escott struck out three in five innings for the Patriots. Edgar Rivas had three hits and Matt Garcia, Ivan Lomeli and Jorge Navarrete added two apiece.

Quartz Hill 1, Desert Christian 0: Daniel Cardenas struck out nine in six shutout innings. Andrew Garcia had two hits and two RBIs.

Paraclete 9, Sierra Canyon 1: Griffen Hagen struck out six in six innings.

Campbell Hall 11, Brentwood 3: Cole Slater had three hits and Elliot Layne hit a home run for Campbell Hall.

Maranatha 13, South Pasadena 3: Freshman Charles Acker struck out six in four innings and also had two hits. Evan Chang went three for three. Ben Guess added three hits and three RBIs.
