The first weekend of high school baseball for Southern Section teams is in the books, and Aliso Niguel gets the award for having the best opening day.

The Wolverines swept preseason No. 1-ranked Huntington Beach in a doubleheader, 3-2 and 7-4.

Sophomore shortstop Demetri Colacchio was the standout, going four for six at the plate while also making some strong defensive plays.

“They’re a great team,” Aliso Niguel Coach Craig Hansen said of Huntington Beach. “They’re going to win a lot of games.”

Aliso Niguel used its ace pitcher, Kyle Molnar, in the second game. Molnar played basketball and had been out for practice for only a week. He was on a pitch count and threw four innings.

Another standout on the day was Agoura’s Matt Lautz, who hit two home runs and had seven RBI while also picking up the pitching victory in a win over previously unbeaten Taft.

Royal’s Kurt Johnson struck out 13 against St. Bonaventure.
