Baseball: Vista Murrieta wins league title in 10th inning

There was plenty of drama on Wednesday at Vista Murrieta. The Southwestern League championship was on the line against Temecula Valley and neither team was budging. Finally, in the bottom of the 10th inning, Angel Ortiz drew a walk with the bases loaded, giving Vista Murrieta (17-8, 10-4) a 2-1 victory and clinching the league title.

Brandon Nelson, Connor Cannon and Jack Moberg combined to limit Temecula Valley to three hits. Jarrod Iwasaki of Temecula Valley allowed one run and two hits in eight innings.

Murrieta Valley defeated Great Oak, 1-0. Nicko Cottone allowed two hits. Zack Noll of Great Oak allowed six hits while striking out nine.

San Dimas finished the regular season at 28-0 after a 3-2 win over Hacienda Heights Wilson. Peter Lambert struck out 15. San Dimas needed a three-run home run from Tommy Acuna to overcome a 2-0 deficit.

Jacob Hughey struck out 15 in Long Beach Millikan’s 2-1 win over Lakewood in a Moore League game at Blair Field. Long Beach Wilson defeated Long Beach Poly, 5-2. Riley Dent had two hits and two RBIs.

In the Del Rey League, Cathedral defeated St. Paul, 4-1. Daniel Casillas went three for three and Emilio Artica threw a complete game, striking out eight.

Tito Acevedo threw a no-hitter, striking out seven, in Baldwin Park’s 10-0 win over Workman. Tico Ruiz went three for three with four RBIs.

Capistrano Valley won the South Coast League title with a 2-1 win over Aliso Niguel. Kevin Joyce drove in the game-winning run in the sixth. El Toro defeated Dana Hills, 8-2.

In the Mission League, Stephen Burke came up with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give Loyola a 2-1 win over Alemany. That means Sherman Oaks Notre Dame won the league title. Alemany and Loyola tied for second. Henry Stellwagen threw a complete game for Loyola.

In the Marmonte League, Oaks Christian defeated Westlake, 3-0. Carson Rudd threw six shutout innings and Phil Quartararo had a home run and two RBIs. Agoura defeated Calabasas, 3-0. Matt Lautz had two RBIs and Ryan Fineman had two hits. Michael Weisberg threw six shutout innings. Newbury Park defeated Thousand Oaks, 6-4. David Hughes had a two-run home run.

In the Ocean League, El Segundo defeated Santa Monica, 8-0. Willem Mostert threw a seven-hitter, striking out four and walking none. Lars Nootbaar had three hits.

In the Sunset League, Huntington Beach defeated Marina, 1-0. Logan Pouelsen hit a home run and Noah Davis, Hagen Danner and Matt Geiger combined on a one-hitter.

In the Channel League, Buena defeated Santa Barbara, 1-0, on an RBI by Zane Chittenden in the seventh inning. Buena and Santa Barbara tie for second place. Austin Rubick struck out nine and allowed three hits for Buena. Trevor Moropoulos struck out 10 and allowed six hits for Santa Barbara.

In the Baseline League, Chino Hills defeated Los Osos, 17-6, to complete a doubleheader sweep. Konnor Zickefoose hit three home runs and finished with six RBIs. In the first game, Chino Hills won, 11-6. Christopher Ceballos hit three home runs. Chino Hills and Etiwanda shared the league title. Etiwanda defeated Upland, 4-3, and 6-5. Tyler Freeman had the key hit in both games.

Sierra Canyon improved to 21-4 with an 11-0, five-inning win over Windward in a Gold Coast League game. Jake Patterson had three hits and three RBIs.

In the Coastal Canyon League, Camarillo defeated Simi Valley, 5-3. Austin Whitaker had two RBIs. Moorpark defeated Royal, 4-1. Ryan Bill struck out six and walked none.

Glenn won the Suburban League championship with a 5-1 win over Bellflower. It’s the school’s first baseball league title in 25 years.

Woodbridge defeated Beckman, 5-4. Foothill defeated Villa Park, 8-7, with two runs in the seventh. Mark Van Skike hit a grand slam for Villa Park. Cypress defeated Western, 11-1. Garrett Brockel and Ezele Wicks hit home runs. James Duran had three hits.

El Modena defeated Canyon, 8-0. Dominic Campeau had three hits.

In the Trinity League, Orange Lutheran defeated St. John Bosco, 4-1.

New Community Jewish defeated Milken, 10-9. David Bar-Or had two hits.

In the first game of a doubleheader, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Village Christian, 10-2. Chris Collins got the win. Mike Wilson had a triple. In the second game, Chris Davidson threw a four-hit shutout in Village Christian’s 12-0 win over the Knights.

In the Foothill League, Valencia defeated Golden Valley, 7-1. Dylan Thomas allowed two hits in five innings.
