Basketball: Southern Section approves new Open Division
Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod has given final approval for the boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs to create an Open Division for this season.
The new divisions: Open Division, 1AA, 1A, 2AA, 2A, 3AA, 3A, 4AA, 4A, 5AA, 5A, 6.
The Open Division will have as many as 16 teams and be selected at the conclusion of the regular season. Any team that is ranked in the top 10 of their division in the final poll will be eligible for selection to the Open Division.
All first-round winners in the Open Division will be guaranteed a CIF state playoff berth. There also will be a consolation bracket involving the first-round losers. The winner of that consolation bracket will be guaranteed a state playoff berth. The other participants will need to apply for a state berth.
