Boys’ basketball: Birmingham, Narbonne impress in openers

Birmingham senior scores 20 points in opener

Watch out for the top basketball teams in the City Section. Besides powerhouses Fairfax and Westchester, beware of Birmingham and Narbonne based on their opening performances on Monday night in the Redondo tournament.

Devante Doutrive scored 27 points and Deschon Winston added 20 points in Birmingham’s 73-54 win over Rancho Christian. Doutrive and Winston are key returnees and both were instrumental in a 17-1 start. Winston made his first four shots. Junior Devonaire Doutrive added 12 points.

Narbonne knocked off defending Division IV state champion Harvard-Westlake, 66-53. The Gauchos showed off athleticism and excellent shooting ability. Jeremiah Galang scored 23 points and Psalm Maduakor had 20.

“I like how we move the ball and have an excellent three-point shooting team,” Coach Anthony Hilliard said.

Harvard-Westlake played without sophomore standout Cassius Stanley (injury). Freshman Johnny Juzang scored 22 points and Carter Begel 14.

Westchester became the third City team to advance to the second round with a 66-50 win over Lynwood. Marquis Moore had 21 points.

Santa Margarita defeated Peninsula, 75-44. Jake Kyman and Kaden Rasheed each scored 16 points.

Freshman Clark Slajchert scored 19 points in Oak Park’s 63-51 win over Dominguez. Wes Slajchert added 16 points and Riley Battin had 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Roosevelt defeated Inglewood, 65-53. Matt Mitchell scored 34 points and Jemarl Baker 22. Redondo defeated Gahr, 66-59. All-CIF guard Ryse Williams scored 19 points. Long Beach Poly defeated Mayfair, 69-57.

Sophomore Mook Harris scored 27 points in St. Bernard’s 75-47 win over Cleveland. Morningside defeated Fremont, 76-66. View Park defeated Campbell Hall, 50-46. Kiel Rogers scored 23 points.

Tuesday’s matchups: Oak Park vs. Roosevelt, 3:30 p.m.; Westchester vs. LB Poly, 5 p.m.; Narbonne vs. Redondo, 6:30 p.m.; Birmingham vs. Santa Margarita, 8 p.m.

In the Calabasas-Chaminade tournament, Heritage Christian defeated Royal, 94-69. Juhwan Harris-Dyson scored 26 points and had 12 rebounds and eight assists.

Windward defeated Agoura, 62-56. Jalen Harris had 22 points and Jules Bernard 16. Chaminade won in the debut of new Coach Jon Palarz, 80-51, over Moorpark. Jack Gallant scored 18 points.

Crenshaw defeated Jurupa Hills, 83-53. Chris Kendrick scored 28 points and Lamaar Harris 18. Dorsey defeated Shalhevet, 69-62. Jon Staggers led the Dons with 22 points.

El Camino Real defeated Simi Valley, 77-59. Jacob Grebeta led Simi Valley with 19 points.

University defeated Verbum Dei, 102-57, in the El Monte tournament. Jude Agbasi scored 19 points and Daisone Hughes 18.

Beverly Hills defeated Bernstein, 81-61. Ron Artest had 24 points and 12 rebounds.
