Boys’ basketball: It’s a Division I semifinal showdown between Granada Hills and Poly

Share

Get ready for an intriguing City Section Division I semifinal on Friday at Roybal between Granada Hills (19-12) and Sun Valley Poly (16-12) at 6 o’clock.

No one knows which team will show up, because when the good Granada Hills team and the good Poly team show up, they don’t normally lose. In other words, inconsistency has caused both teams issues.

Poly relies on high-scoring Cesar Reyes. Granada Hills is not going to allow him to get open shots. Granada Hills has much more balanced scoring, with Michael Kalu leading the way at 13 points.

“The point guard needs to control the tempo,” Highlanders Coach Don Loperena said of his point guard, Travis Fukumoto.

The other semifinal also presents challenges, with Sylmar (19-13) taking on Washington (13-12) at 8 p.m. Sylmar was the No. 9 seed and upset No. 1 Palisades last week. Sylmar owns an 82-67 early season win over Granada Hills (the Highlanders would love to play Sylmar next week for the championship).
