Boys’ basketball: It’s back to Division V for Sierra Canyon and Price

Share

So much for the experiment of playing in the Open Division for Sierra Canyon and Price. Both have been eliminated and now it’s back to playing in Division V for the state playoffs.

Both teams won’t know for sure until the state regional pairings are announced a week from Sunday, but each is expected to be an at-large team.

Sierra Canyon lost to Etiwanda in the quarterfinals. Price lost to Long Beach Poly in the consolation bracket. Each would have been a Southern Section title contender without being in the Open Division.

“It was one of the team goals,” Price Coach Michael Lynch said of the Open Division. “We just weren’t successful once we got there.”

Price led Santa Ana Mater Dei in the fourth quarter of its Open Division opener before losing. Price didn’t play well on Wednesday against Poly. Price would have been in Division 6 and cruised to a section title.

Sierra Canyon would have been favored in 5AA. Now the Trailblazers figure to be favored in Division V and facing Price and Windward for the regional title when the playoffs begin.

Price players won’t practice again until next week. Sierra Canyon is set to practice today.
