Boys’ basketball: Marvin Bagley III is no ordinary prep player

Sierra Canyon junior is a player to watch

High school basketball fans in Southern California are in for a treat when the season begins in November. They’ll get to ooh and ah with every ridiculous dunk thrown down by 6-foot-11 junior Marvin Bagley III of Sierra Canyon.

Ineligible last season after moving from Arizona, Bagley is finally going to have the chance to show what all the fuss was about when he arrived. A look at a Sierra Canyon practice on Wednesday night provided a hint.

Bagley is an extraordinary athlete who wears size 17 shoes. He’s making himself an all-around player, being able to shoot from outside, run the court, play defense and dunk whenever he wants.

Combined with 6-7 Cody Riley, it’s going to be a weekly dunkathon that will bring out large crowds.

Next week, college coaches are expected to pack the Sierra Canyon gym watching the school’s half-dozen future college players work out.

Sierra Canyon will join Chino Hills and Bishop Montgomery as the favorites to challenge for a Southern Section Open Division challenge.

If you want to see a sneak preview of Bagley, he’ll make his debut on Sunday when Sierra Canyon plays in the Joseph Frazier Showcase at 4:15 p.m. against Cantwell-Sacred Heart at Chaminade High.
