Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei holds off Westchester to win Open Division regional

Westchester rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second quarter to take a six-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Mater Dei (34-0) came away with a 59-54 victory in the Southern California Regional Open Division final at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Stanley Johnson maded four consecutive free throws in the final 22 seconds to secure the victory. He finished with 19 points. La’vette Parker had 15 points and M.J. Cage 13.

Elijah Stewart led Westchester with 19 points. Westchester opened a 53-47 lead in the fourth quarter before the Monarchs got some defensive stops, created some turnovers and earned a trip to Sacrament to face Bishop O’Dowd in next Saturday’s 8 p.m. championship game.
