Football: Injuries starting to pile up and affect teams

Share

With only three weeks left in the regular season, injuries are starting to happen, and teams that are able to overcome those injuries could result in playoff appearances or not.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame found out how much it missed linebacker Mike Ramos last week. Crespi ran the ball again and again up the middle with Ramos stuck on the sideline recovering from a concussion the previous week. Then the Knights lost quarterback Cole Klayman, who could be sidelined indefinitely with a shoulder injury. The Knights fell to Crespi, 56-21.

Alemany lost running back Dominic Davis to an ankle injury the previous week and held him out last week against Loyola but was still able to win, 24-23. He’s expected to return this week against Gardena Serra.

Servite quarterback Travis Waller hurt his ankle last week against Mater Dei and was able to play in the fourth quarter. We’ll see if Waller can go this week against Orange Lutheran.

The big surprise so far is Crespi, which is 6-1 with a team of 30 players. The Celts haven’t suffered any major injuries other than losing their center briefly, and they were able to overcome that in a win over Loyola.

Developing depth and capable backups is the key to dealing with injuries. It was the reason St. John Bosco was able to go 16-0 last season and is why coaches want transfer students who can add depth to a team.
