Pioneer High School in Whittier will have a grand opening ceremony on May 28 unveiling its new 7,000-seat football stadium that will be named Dick Torres Memorial Stadium.

Torres served for more than 30 years as an educational leader in the Whittier Union district. He died in 2010.

The $17.5 million facility has a synthetic field, a nine-lane synthetic track, scoreboard, press box, locker and weight rooms. It will be shared by Pioneer and Santa Fe.

It was funded through a $75 million facilities bond passed by local voters.
