“One, two, three, four, five . . .”

I’m having a nightmare remembering St. John Bosco assistant coach Chad Johnson’s count down in the weight room.

“Six, seven, eight, nine, 10 . . .”

If you want to know how the Braves keep winning football games, a visit to the weight room reveals all the secrets.

There’s sweat and nonstop action. Yes, spring football practice officially begins this week, but it’s what happens in the weight room that paves the way for everything.

A visit this past week showed me all I needed to know. There was Jacob Callier, the 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end who had 12 sacks last season. He’s got muscles bulging from his arms.

There was 6-4, 315-pound offensive tackle Wyatt Davis. As he rested on the floor, perspiration dripping from his face, he followed Johnson’s count and kept challenging himself no matter how tough the exercise got.

Across Southern California, there’s lots of players getting stronger and better in weight rooms filled with sweat and activity.

Now, if only I can get Johnson’s voice out of my mind so I can get some sleep . . .

“15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.”
