Football: St. John Bosco’s best move in off season was keeping Chad Johnson

After football teams have success at the collegiate level, assistant coaches start scattering while trying to get pay raises or obtain a head coach opportunity. It’s no different at the high school level for some programs.

After St. John Bosco went 16-0 last season, Coach Jason Negro’s biggest accomplishment in the off season might have been being able to keep offensive coordinator Chad Johnson from leaving.

Johnson spent many years with Negro at Trabuco Hills, which had an opening for head coach. Many thought that’s where Johnson would have ended up. But he’s still at St. John Bosco, which has begun practice in preparation for a season opener on Aug. 22 in Hawaii.

Johnson has helped develop quarterback Josh Rosen and running back Sean McGrew. And he’s going to be an important contributor early in the season while the Braves’ defense tries to develop following the loss of key players to graduation.

He wants to be a head coach one day, so he won’t be staying at St. John Bosco forever. But the Braves have him in 2014, so beware.
