Former San Fernando football Coach Sean Blunt dies at 48

Sean Blunt, an All-City defensive back at San Fernando in the 1980s who went on to play at Nevada-Las Vegas and came back to coach and teach at his alma mater, died on Sunday night at his home after a bout with cancer, according to family friend Tom Hernandez. He was 48.

More than 600 people had come together in February in San Fernando trying to raise funds to help Blunt with his treatment.

Hernandez, who coached Blunt at San Fernando, said he visited him Sunday afternoon. Blunt had been helping coach at St. Genevieve. He spent more than 20 years at San Fernando as an assistant and head coach.

“Football has been a big part of his life,” Hernandez said.

Blunt became head coach at San Fernando in 1993 and spent 11 years running the program. He continued as a P.E. teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

He is survived by his wife, Kim, and two children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
