LAUSD cancels all outside sporting events for Monday and Tuesday

Because of excessive heat, the Los Angeles Unified School District has canceled all outside high school sporting events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, according to a spokesman for the district’s athletics office.

That includes a scheduled water polo match between Birmingham and Taft. Tennis and water polo are the main events canceled. No events were scheduled for Tuesday because it’s a professional development day.

Football teams are not allowed to practice outside unless they receive special permission from their local district operations administrator to change the time to the evening hours.

Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas, whose team is scheduled to play Gardena Serra on Friday, said his request to practice Monday evening was rejected. He said it was 85 degrees and he wanted to practice at 5:30 p.m. The team will watch film and lift weights.

Trent Cornelius, the district spokesman for athletics, said concern about the lack of shade on pool decks for athletes and spectators is the reason water polo also was canceled.

As of Monday afternoon, the temperature was 101 degrees in Woodland Hills and 105 in Van Nuys.
