Michael Norman of Vista Murrieta is already recognized as the best track and field athlete in California. Now he has the honor of being recognized as the best in the nation.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Norman, a junior, is the winner of the Gatorade's award for national athlete of the year in track and field.

It comes as no surprise considering the type of person and the type of athlete Norman has been this season.

As he won race after race and set records along the way, he maintained a humble, respectful demeanor that caused more and more fans to root for him. Even opponents were in awe at the way he went about his races and how he reacted afterward.

His times this season were extraordinary for a junior: 10.36 for 100 meters, 20.24 for 200 meters, 45.19 for 400 meters. He won state championships in the 200 and 400.

Norman received his honor on Tuesday at Vista Murrieta. It makes him a finalist for the Gatorade national athlete of the year award that will be announced on July 14 in Los Angeles.
