Southern Section releases soccer, basketball playoff divisions

Loyola and Servite top the Southern Section power rankings for boys’ soccer and lead the teams in the Division 1 playoff grouping announced on Thursday under the new criteria and formula used to decide groupings in all sports.

Cathedral moves up to Division 1 and is part of powerful group that includes Paramount, Warren, Los Alamitos, San Clemente, St. Francis, El Toro and Santa Margarita, among others.

Century is the last team in Division 1 and Katella is the first one in Division 2.

In boys’ basketball, Chino Hills tops the 1AA power rankings. There are 44 schools in 1AA. Beverly Hills is the last one in and Walnut is the first school in 1A.

Among the 1AA teams are Bishop Montgomery, Mater Dei, Corona Centennial, Orange Lutheran, Sierra Canyon, Alemany, Damien, Los Alamitos, Oak Park, Roosevelt, North, Ayala, Edison, Compton, Santa Margarita, Santa Monica, Serra and Inglewood.

La Canada gets moved up to 1A, along with Loyola, Dominguez, Pasadena, Chaminade and Millikan.

In girls’ basketball, Chaminade, Long Beach and Troy top 1AA. Chino Hills is the last team in and Bishop Montgomery is No. 1 in 1A.
