Water polo: It will be Harvard-Westlake vs. Mater Dei for Division 1 championship

It’s only fitting that the best rivalry in high school water polo will resume on Saturday in the Southern Section Division 1 championship match.

No. 1-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei and No. 2-seeded Harvard-Westlake won their semifinal matches on Wednesday.

Mater Dei withstood an impressive rally from Loyola to prevail, 7-6.

Two-time defending champion Harvard-Westlake defeated Huntington Beach, 12-9. Felix Brozyna-Vilim scored four goals and Ben Hallock, returning from a thumb injury, added three goals.

Harvard-Westlake will face Mater Dei in the final on Saturday at Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine. The time will be announced later this week.

In the City Section, Palisades won its fourth consecutive championship with a 19-3 win over Birmingham at Valley College. Mitchell Kim led the Dolphins to victory with eight goals.
