Ducks' Giguere, Getzlaf don't play against Kings

Not since the beginning of the season have the Ducks been this depleted with their lineup, but they again took to the ice Wednesday night missing several key components.

Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere and leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf did not play against the Kings because of injuries as they join forwards Corey Perry and Ryan Carter and defenseman Chris Pronger on the sidelines.

Giguere is still bothered by back spasms that flared up Friday night in San Jose before their loss to the Sharks, and Getzlaf strained his shoulder during the third period when he hit San Jose center Joe Pavelski.

The two Ducks stars sat out Saturday's 2-1 win at Phoenix. Giguere and Getzlaf are pushing to return for Friday's home game against the Sharks, but both also want to exercise caution.

"I've got to make sure that I don't drag this out until the end of the season," said Giguere, who has been stellar with a 33-17-6 record and 2.11 goals-against average. "I've got to get rid of it now and not think about it after.

"There's still quite a bit of time. You've got to be smart. Make sure you make the right decision, one that you're not going to wind up regretting after."

Getzlaf has sat out four games this season but easily outpaces the rest of his teammates with a career-high 77 points, including 23 goals.

"These are all big games for us right now," he said. "It's unfortunate that I'm not going to be able to contribute in that way."

The Ducks won't get Perry (lacerated quadriceps muscle) back until the second round of the playoffs, if they get that far.

Carter skated Wednesday, but it remains in question whether his broken wrist has healed enough for him to make an appearance before the regular-season finale April 6 against Phoenix. Pronger served the fifth game of his eight-game suspension for stepping on Vancouver's Ryan Kesler.

Because of a conflict with the Angels' exhibition game at San Diego, the Ducks' contest Friday against San Jose at the Honda Center will be broadcast on radio station 1150 instead of the usual 830.

According to a team spokesman, the defending Stanley Cup champions could be pushed aside to other stations at times during the playoffs because of conflicts with the Angels, who will broadcast all of their games on the Arte Moreno-owned station.

The spokesman said that a backup plan is already in place in case of conflicts.

A moment of silence was held in honor of Randal Simmons, who was the first Los Angeles SWAT officer killed in the line of duty when he was mortally wounded Feb. 7 after a standoff with a gunman in Winnetka.

Simmons' partner, James Veenstra, did the ceremonial first puck drop. Veenstra, who was seriously injured in the shootout, was invited by the team after it was learned that he is a longtime fan who watched Ducks games while he was hospitalized.
