Ducks’ lineup again depleted as injuries sideline Giguere, Getzlaf
They join three other teammates out for tonight’s game but are pushing to return Friday for the San Jose matchup.
Not since the beginning of the season have the Ducks been this depleted with their lineup but they’ll again take to the ice tonight missing several key components.
Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere and leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf are not expected to play tonight against the Kings because of injuries as they join forwards Corey Perry and Ryan Carter and defenseman Chris Pronger on the sidelines.
Giguere is still bothered by back spasms that flared up Friday night in San Jose prior to the Ducks’ loss to the Sharks while Getzlaf strained his shoulder during the third period of that game when he hit San Jose center Joe Pavelski.
Giguere and Getzlaf sat out Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Phoenix but did take the ice today for a workout following the morning skate. Still, it appears that each will miss their second straight game.
“I’ve got to make sure that I don’t drag this out until the end of the season,” said Giguere, who’s been stellar with a 33-17-6 record and 2.11 goals-against average. “I’ve got to get rid of it now and not think about it after.”
Getzlaf has missed four games this season but easily outpaces the rest of his teammates with a career-high 77 points, including 23 goals.
Like Giguere, Getzlaf is pushing to return Friday when the Ducks host San Jose.
“I’ll know more tonight when I see the doctors,” Getzlaf said. “These are all big games for us right now. It’s unfortunate that I’m not going to be able to contribute in that way.”
The Ducks won’t get Perry back until the second round of the playoffs, that is if they clinch a spot this week and get that far. Perry has a lacerated quadriceps muscle.
Carter skated today but it remains a question whether his broken wrist has healed enough for him to make an appearance before the regular-season finale April 6 against Phoenix. Pronger is serving the fifth game of his eight-game suspension for stepping on Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler.
