LaBarbera, Aubin each will get some time in goal

The last two Kings off the ice after practice Thursday were goalies Jason LaBarbera and J.S. Aubin.

The first to skate into the net Saturday at Colorado is still cloaked in secrecy.

“We’ll leave it a mystery,” Coach Marc Crawford said. “They’ll each play one game in these next two games.”

LaBarbera’s grip as the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper became more slippery Wednesday night after he was pulled in the first period against visiting San Jose for giving up two goals in the first eight minutes of the 3-2 loss. It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Kings (12-24-2).

“Any time you get pulled that early, you’re a little surprised,” LaBarbera said.

LaBarbera says he’s still trying to get comfortable in goal after missing eight games because of a rib injury. After stopping 91.6% of his opponent’s shots in the first 18 games, his percentage has dipped to 88.7% in the five games since his return.

Aubin relieved LaBarbera for the fourth time this season and stopped 21 of 22 shots.

“It will be good for both of us to get in there,” LaBarbera said. “Just get comfortable out there and get a win, that’s the biggest thing.”

LaBarbera said he spent most of the extra time after practice trying to see the puck off the stick more clearly. On San Jose’s second goal, he said he never saw the initial shot from Joe Pavelski. The puck rebounded off LaBarbera’s pads before Pavelski stuck it in the net.

“Pavelski did a good job getting the puck to the net,” LaBarbera said. “I thought he was going to go back door until he shot it at me. . . . It happened so fast. I didn’t really see him shoot it.”

Brad Stuart missed practice because of a lingering sore foot. With fellow defenseman Kevin Dallman already sidelined approximately two weeks because of a broken foot suffered Saturday at Nashville, the Kings probably will promote a defenseman before their next game “to give us a safety valve,” Crawford said.

“If Stuart is ready to play and he’s ready to play at a decent level, then we’ll keep” him in the lineup, Crawford said.

Dallman was seen wearing a walking boot after practice Thursday, but Crawford said the defenseman would see a foot specialist to determine whether a hard cast is needed.

Michael Cammalleri, the team’s second-leading scorer with 15 goals, remained doubtful for Saturday’s game because of a rib injury suffered last weekend against Nashville.

The news was better for left winger Dustin Brown, who returned Wednesday night after missing two games because of a shoulder injury. Brown said the injury, which he called a first-degree acromioclavicular separation, did not feel any worse during the game.

“Once I got past maybe the first 10 minutes, I started being more comfortable with it,” he said. “I think I had a few good hits out there. . . . That’s a positive. I was able to play part of my game.”
