Boys’ basketball: Fairfax knocks off 1A champion Riverside King

The Division I playoffs in the Southern California Regionals started with an upset. City Section Division I semifinalist Fairfax defeated Southern Section 1A champion Riverside King, 63-48.

Sage Woodruff scored 16 points, Lorne Currie had 12 points and Donald Gipson and Lindsey Drew added 10 points apiece. “We had a good week of practice and we played good, smart basketball,” Coach Harvey Kitani said.

Another City team, Narbonne, came close to eliminating 1AA champion Long Beach Poly. It took a layup in the closing seconds by K.J. Feagin to rally the Jackrabbits to a 54-53 victory. Uchenna Okeneme had given Narbonne a 53-52 lead by making two free throws with nine seconds left.

Loyola and Mission Viejo moved toward a second-round matchup. Loyola defeated Palisades, 86-55. Max Hazzard had 14 points and 14 assists. Mission Viejo defeated Oceanside El Camino, 79-72. Mayfair defeated Torrey Pines, 58-54. Deontae North scored 28 points in Corona Centennial’s 94-64 win over Bullard.

In Division II, Calabasas opened a 15-point lead in the third quarter, then had to survive a furious comeback by Sylmar to prevail, 57-54. Conner Longmire and Jeremy Lieberman made clutch free throws in the closing seconds. Larry Bush had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Devenir Duruisseau finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds for Sylmar.

Westlake lost to Hanford, 58-57. Isaiah Brooks had 12 points for the Warriors. Tyler Dorsey scored 22 points in St. John Bosco’s 69-41 win over Granada Hills. Compton defeated Garfield, 92-28.

In Division III, Oak Park defeated Fresno Roosevelt, 73-59. Michael Oguine scored 20 points, Trevor Stanback had 19 pooints and Jack Williams 16 in Chaminade’s 74-39 win over Dinuba. St. Francis defeated Kearny, 67-62. Kyle Leufroy had 17 points.

In Division IV, Windward defeated LACES, 84-59. Jalen Harris scored 19 points and Eli Silverman-Lloyd had 17. Serra defeated Granite Hills, 76-43. Village Christian defeated Coalinga, 58-46. Bear Henderson made 10 of 14 shots and finished with 25 points. Aleks Abrams scored 23 points and had 19 rebounds in Oaks Christian’s 79-61 win over Washington Union.
