Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf injures ankle against Kings

The Ducks ended the Kings’ streak, but the two points in the playoff race might have come at a high price.

Ryan Getzlaf, the team’s leading scorer, sprained his left ankle during the second period and left the arena wearing a boot and on crutches. X-rays were negative, but an MRI exam is scheduled for Tuesday.

“That will give us a better indication of the severity of the sprain,” Coach Randy Carlyle said.

The Ducks have three games remaining before the Olympic break, when Getzlaf is scheduled to play for Canada in Vancouver.

Canada’s first game is Feb. 16, eight days after his injury.

“Hopefully, he won’t be out too long,” Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer said. “I don’t have to say what he means to this team, what he does for us. So hopefully it’s not bad.”

Niedermayer, also captain of Team Canada, said he hadn’t considered the potential impact on the Olympic team.

“I know he would love to play and wants to play, and we don’t really know how badly hurt he is right now. Hopefully he’s in our lineup in two nights. That would be good.”

Getzlaf, 24, has 14 goals and 56 points and leads the Ducks in hits as well.

Selanne nears mark

The Ducks’ Teemu Selanne scored his 597th career goal, leaving him four shy of boyhood idol Jari Kurri, who finished his career with 601.

Team is fresh

Carlyle noted the Ducks’ last two losses against the Kings were the second of back-to-back games.

“We didn’t have any energy and they did. Tonight we had a lot of energy,” he said.

Burke funeral

The delegation that traveled to the funeral being held for Brendan Burke on Tuesday in Boston included Ducks owners Henry and SusanSamueli, General Manager Bob Murray and Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti, a team spokesman said.

The 21-year-old son of former Ducks general manager Brian Burke died Friday in Indiana in a weather-related car accident.

Colletti, a newspaper hockey reporter early in his career, became close to Brian Burke while both were in Southern California, and the Samuelis invited him to join them on their plane.

Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi left the game because of flu-like symptoms. Kings defenseman Davis Drewiske returned to the lineup after missing 15 games because of a shoulder injury. . . . Ducks goaltender Vesa Toskala dressed as the backup for the first time after joining the team Sunday.
