Corey Perry’s first three-goal game leads Ducks to 6-2 win over Minnesota

Call it a Corey Perry hat trick: Three goals, four stitches and five points.

The Ducks’ 25-year-old standout earned the first hat trick of his 401-game NHL career Sunday in a 6-2 win over Minnesota at the Honda Center, and he did it with style.

His first goal came 19 seconds into the game. The second came on a penalty shot after he was pulled down on a short-handed breakaway by Martin Havlat in the second period. And the last came courtesy of a power-play setup by captain Ryan Getzlaf, who had his own shot at a hat trick but passed to Perry instead for Perry’s third goal of the game and 16th of the season.

“It’s pretty cool. It’s been a long time coming,” said Perry, who raised both arms and his right knee in celebration at 15:47 of the third.

Oh, and the stitches on his right cheek: Those were courtesy of Nick Schultz’s high stick in the second.

“I look like a chipmunk, but it’s not too bad,” Perry said.

On a night when Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu were out of the lineup — two players with more than 800 combined goals — the Ducks’ big line of young stars came up big, combining for 11 points.

Perry had three goals and two assists, Getzlaf had two goals and one assist, and Bobby Ryan had one goal and two assists.

Ryan’s goal was one that left hockey lifers scratching their heads over whether they’d seen anything like it.

He scored it with another player’s stick: Minnesota forward Mikko Koivu, the brother of teammate Saku Koivu.

Adding to the degree of difficulty, Ryan has a right-handed shot but Koivu shoots left.

“I think I’ll go get a couple of left-handed hockey sticks myself,” said Ryan, who lost his stick to Koivu, then picked up Koivu’s off the ice just before the puck came to him wide-open on the left side of the net.

“I just told him, ‘You took mine right out of my hands in the corner,’ ” Ryan said. “Finders keepers, I guess. I’ll take yours.”

With Selanne and his 616 NHL goals out again because of a nagging groin injury and Saku Koivu’s 220 goals missing because he had flu-like symptoms, the Ducks’ young trio took over.

“They’re a unique grouping of hockey players who have size and skill,” Coach Randy Carlyle said. “When things go their way, you sit back and say, ‘Hey, go to it.’

“There are times when they frustrate you and turn the puck over or make one extra pass. … Tonight, everything fell into place for them.”

That, it did.

No one was more on than Perry, who scored the first penalty-shot goal of his career after taking the puck from Havlat and taking off on a breakaway before he was hooked down.

He beat Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom with a forehand that went five-hole, going between Backstrom’s pads at 14:19 of the second.

“Everything was going our way tonight,” Perry said.

“It’s something I won’t forget. That’s for sure.”

Forward Aaron Voros will be out three to four weeks because of a broken orbital bone in his face, but he will not require surgery. … With the Ducks short on forwards, defenseman Andy Sutton was pressed into service as a winger.
