Lethal Heat tries her luck at Hollywood Park
She went three for three at Santa Anita to start her career.
Lethal Heat, who went three for three to begin her career at Santa Anita, will look for her first victory at Hollywood Park in the $100,000 Railbird Stakes on Sunday.
A Grade III at seven furlongs, the Railbird attracted nine others, including, among others, Magical Victory, Tasha’s Miracle and P.S.U. Grad.
A California-bred daughter of Unusual Heat owned by breeders David Abrams, Madeline Auerbach and Ron McCauley and trained by Barry Abrams, Lethal Heat will be seeking her second consecutive Grade III victory.
After defeating maidens at 22-1 in her debut, then winning an optional claimer 19 days later, Lethal Heat captured the Santa Paula at 7-1 on March 30. Rafael Bejarano will ride Lethal Heat for the first time in the Railbird, which will also be her initial start beyond 6 1/2 furlongs.
The field also includes Northern California shipper Sweet Hope. Owned by High Bank Syndicate and trained by Steve Sherman, the Lemon Drop Kid filly won by two lengths in her U.S. debut on April 13 at Bay Meadows. She had won once in seven starts in England before arriving in California. Jon Court will ride Sweet Hope, who will leave from the rail.
Race of the day: Wild Promises, who has won four of six on the turf, will look for her third win in four tries on the grass at Bay Meadows in the $55,000 Mother’s Day Handicap, which is the closing day feature at the San Mateo track, which is scheduled to be torn down later this year. David Lopez will ride the 4-year-old Wild Event filly for owner Harry Aleo and trainer Greg Gilchrist in the race at 1 1/16 miles. Rockella, Butters, Greetings, Private Banking, Tucker’s Tune, Andover The Cash and Unspoken Word are also scheduled to run.
One for the road: El Caballo was best when defeated by a head in his first of the year on April 23 at Keeneland and can win with a trouble-free trip in the 11th race at Churchill Downs. James Lopez has the mount on the 4-year-old El Corredor colt for owner James Spence and trainer Thomas Drury Jr. in the $49,300 maiden contest at 6 1/2 furlongs.
Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Power Shift in the sixth, Medzendeekron, Faulkwood Shores and Billy Allen in the seventh, Lethal Heat, Magical Victory and Lovely Isle in the eighth and Bea’s Cee, Red Tomatoes and Roberta’s Bambina in the ninth.
Winners: (previous day/meet total): 1/34. Money (previous day/meet total): $8.80/$205.40. Total money bet: $244.
