Whiteland entered the regular season finale against Decatur Central controlling their own destiny in the Mid-State Conference.
Thanks to a gutsy decision by Decatur Central head coach Justin Dixson, it was the Whiteland defense who had one play to preserve a championship.
The Mid-State conference rivals were tied at 21 at the end of regulation. Whiteland had the ball first and scored a touchdown and added the extra point to take a 28-21 lead. Decatur Central answered with a touchdown and Dixson decided to follow a strategy he used against Plainfield at Lucas Oil Stadium. Decatur Central beat Plainfield 35-34 on September 25th when the Hawks scored a two-point conversion in overtime to win the game.
This time, the Hawks weren't so successful as Jess Harris made the stop of the season and the Warriors celebrated a championship on the Hawks home field, 38-37 in overtime.
Whiteland (7-2) hosts Bloomington South in a sectional seven opener, while Decatur Central (6-3) tries to bounce back with a trip to Columbus North.
