Janay DeLoach, the Alaska state record holder in the long jump, needed all of one leap to advance to the 12-woman finals of the Olympics on Tuesday. DeLoach, a 2003 Eielson High School graduate, soared to a mark of 6 point 81 meters, or 22 feet, 4 and one eighth inches in the preliminary round.
A jump of 6 point 7 meters earns an automatic qualifying mark for the finals. Only four women in the field jumped at least that far, and since DeLoach made it on her initial jump, she sat down for the remainder of the preliminary round to rest up for Wednesday's finals.
DeLoach finished sixth at last year's world championships and won a silver medal at this year's world indoor championships.
To this day, DeLoach is the only girl to clear 18 feet in the ASAA championship meet. Her state record jump stands at 19 feet, 5 inches.
