Northern Michigan is currently a member of the CCHA. That league also faces the loss of additional schools following the formation of a new super-conference that includes North Dakota, Denver, Colorado College, Minnesota State-Mankato, and Nebraska-Omaha out of the WCHA and Miami out of the CCHA.
UAA Athletic Director Dr. Steve Cobb will be traveling to Minnesota this Friday for a meeting with the five remaining WCHA schools and says expanding to at least six schools will be a priority and won't rule out the possibility of merging with the CCHA to add more depth to conference play.
"You have two leagues right now that have 14 games of non-conference needs, and that's huge," said Dr. Cobb.
"Non-conference games are more expensive, they're harder to schedule, so we're going to have a philosophy about how we're going to handle our non-conference."
