At the plate: Leadoff batter Erick Aybar (single, two walks) and No. 2 hitter Howie Kendrick (single, two-run homer, walk) reached base in their first three plate appearances, setting the table superbly for Albert Pujols. Vernon Wells, who believes the key to rebounding from a horrendous 2011 season (.218, 66 RBIs) is driving the ball up the middle, hit a two-run single to center in the first and lined out hard to left field in the third.

On the mound: C.J. Wilson has made several mechanical adjustments to his delivery this winter but declined to discuss them in detail. “Everything is subtle at this level,” he told reporters after his two-inning stint. “There’s not a lot you can see unless you’re really breaking it down on video. There are a lot of little things. You guys aren’t technical kinesiologists, so there’s no point in getting into it.”

Extra bases: Reserve shortstop Andrew Romine made a spectacular backhand diving stop of a Kila Ka’aihue one-hop shot in the ninth and threw to first for the out.... Mark Trumbo ran the bases full speed Monday and could begin playing third base in games by the end of this week.... Designated hitter Bobby Abreu was scratched from Monday’s lineup because of flu symptoms.
