Spring training: Oakland 8, Angels 7

AT THE PLATE: Efren Navarro, an outfielder-first baseman competing for a bench spot, had three hits, including a hit-and-run, run-scoring single through a vacated shortstop hole in the fourth inning and a run-scoring double to right-center field in the sixth. Infield candidate Taylor Featherston drove in two runs with a single and a safety squeeze, second base candidate Johnny Giavotella had a run-scoring double in the seventh, and Eric Stamets tripled and scored on Daniel Robertson’s single in the eighth. Second base candidate Josh Rutledge struck out three times.

ON THE MOUND: Reliever Vinnie Pestano entered in the eighth with one out and the tying run at second base and got Matt Olson to ground to first base and struck out Luke Carlin looking to snuff out the threat. But the A’s scored twice against Edgar Ibarra in the ninth, the winning run scoring when Renato Nunez, against a five-man infield, grounded a bases-loaded single off Ibarra’s foot. Fernando Salas and Mike Morin each threw hitless innings, but Cam Bedrosian struggled in his first spring game, giving up three runs and four hits and walking one on the seventh.

EXTRA BASES: Closer Huston Street is scheduled to make his first spring appearance Sunday. Setup man Joe Smith won’t pitch in a game until later this week, but the veteran right-hander said the team has mapped out 10-11 appearances for him this spring, giving him ample time to prepare for the season. Smith had 11 appearances last spring.
