Kings make it seven wins in a row with 4-2 victory over Oilers

EDMONTON, Canada — Goalie Ben Scrivens knew he would have to worry about the usual suspects among his former Kings teammates.

Of course, there was leading scorer Jeff Carter and the two-way brilliance of center Anze Kopitar. Then there was the man who came to dinner: Kings defenseman Alec Martinez. Martinez put the Kings ahead for good in their 4-2 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night at Rexall Place.

Carter scored twice, his 23rd and 24th goals of the season. His first goal went off the left skate of Edmonton defenseman Philip Larsen, just 1 minute 36 seconds into the game, and Carter’s other goal glanced off his own skate, giving the Kings a 3-1 lead at 10:16 of the second period.

Also, forward Trevor Lewis picked up his third goal of the season, making it 4-1 for the Kings at 15:49 of the second period. He was set up by Carter, who took advantage of a weak clearing attempt by defenseman Andrew Ference.

Scrivens was traded by the Kings to the Oilers on Jan. 15 for a third-round draft pick in 2014. It happened to be his fine work that helped the Kings stay afloat when starter Jonathan Quick went out with a serious groin injury in November.

The three-goal scoring surge by the Kings in the second period sparked them to their seventh straight victory and they peppered Scrivens with 50 shots.

Up next: Taking aim at a franchise mark established in 2009-10. That’s when the Kings won nine straight games. Of note, six of those nine wins were one-goal games.

“I’ve always say since I’ve been here — Games 40 to 60 for some reason — the Kings slip,” defenseman Willie Mitchell said. “Then 60 to 80, we turn it on, find ways to win and carry that into the postseason.

“It’s really nice you have a group with the ability to do that. But it would be a little bit more nice if we played better 40 through 60 and set us up for a better position come playoffs.”

The Kings have stymied and outshot their opponents, 91-45, in the two games on this trip to Canada. Edmonton and the Kings exchanged goals in the first period — one from Carter and the other from high-scoring Oilers forward Taylor Hall.

Martinez broke the 1-1 tie with a wrist shot from above the right circle through a screen at 8:49 of the second period, for his seventh goal of the season, a career-high. He has three goals in the last four games.

Scrivens and his wife, Jenny, had Martinez over for dinner on Saturday night. “He’s a great guy,” Scrivens said of Martinez after Sunday’s morning skate. “I told him to take it easy on me. I don’t know if he’s going to listen.”

Martinez, who said they had steak, joked that he didn’t listen.

There was an amusing note when Jenny Scrivens tweeted after the Martinez goal: “I take back that dinner I made you last night @amartinez_27 !! Thought we had an understanding...”

“Obviously it feels good to feel you are contributing on an individual level,” Martinez said. “But most importantly, we’re winning games right now.”

Asked about how difficult it was playing against his ex-teammates, Scrivens motioned to the Oilers’ dressing room and said: “These are my teammates. I don’t care about the L.A. Kings anymore. Obviously, I’ve got friends on that team, but once you’re on the ice, I’m an Edmonton Oiler and that’s all that should matter.”
