Bud Selig briefs MLB executive council on Dodgers
Reporting from New York — Dodgers owner Frank McCourt met with Commissioner Bud Selig on Wednesday, the first day of baseball’s quarterly owners’ meetings. McCourt, who recently said Selig was “ducking me,” offered no comments and took no questions when he passed a group of reporters.
“I’ve got nothing for you,” McCourt said.
Selig briefed the owners’ executive council on the Dodgers’ situation, including his investigation of the team’s finances and the possible litigation McCourt might initiate against Major League Baseball. The briefing included Tom Schieffer, the trustee appointed by Selig to oversee the Dodgers, and the lawyers representing MLB.
There were no announcements Wednesday. Selig is scheduled to speak with reporters Thursday.
McCourt does not now have the cash to meet the Dodgers’ May 31 payroll, according to two people familiar with the matter. If he cannot make payroll, Selig could pay the bills for him and seize the team. McCourt says he could pay his bills if Selig would approve a proposed broadcast-rights contract between the Dodgers and Fox.
