Dorsey boys, Carson girls win City Section team championships in track and field

The final event of the evening summed up the City Section track and field championships Thursday at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa.

Los Angeles Dorsey won the boys’ 1,600-meter relay and Carson won the girls’ 1,600 as the two schools ran away with the team competition.

Dorsey racked up a staggering 110 points in 15 events to win the boys’ meet for the second straight year. Birmingham was second with 36.5 points and Fairfax and Woodland Hills El Camino Real tied for third with 28.

Having already locked up the team title, Dorsey’s 1,600 team of Marvin Hall, Greg Veals, Dominique Harris and Rashard Clark won in 3 minutes 19.15 seconds. The Dons’ 400-meter relay team set the tone in the first event, winning in 41.58 as Clark pulled away on the anchor leg.

Clark not only anchored both relays, he also won the 400-meter dash in 47.45, with Veals taking third in 48.25.

Woodland Hills Taft junior Lexis Lambert opened the meet by anchoring the Toreadors’ 400 relay team, which won in 47.59 seconds. She also won the 100 in 12.16 and the 200 in 24.88.

Taft senior Laurie Henigan won the girls’ 100 hurdles in 14.52 and was on her way to doubling in the 300 hurdles but lost her stride with two barriers left and stumbled over the last one, finishing fourth in 46.73 and failing to qualify for the state meet. She also ran the first leg on the winning 400 relay.

Carson teammates Monay Meggs (56.20) and Arbony Meighan (56.69) were first and second in the girls’ 400, sophomore Dayna Hurd won the 300 hurdles in 44.84 and Colts junior Kierra Miller went 17 feet 6.75 inches to win the girls’ long jump.

Meighan, Hurd, Meggs and Dierra Haven clocked 3:52.20 to win the 400 relay as Carson totaled 93 points as a team.

Taft finished second in the 1,600 to clinch second place with 63 points, four more than defending champion Palisades.

Santee seniors Omar Cortez and Charlene Quintanilla won the boys’ and girls’ 3,200 races. Cortez ran the eight laps in 9:26.13 and Quintanilla won in 11:18.31 with Falcons teammate Crystal Morales second in 11:24.77.
