The Boston Red Sox designated outfielder Grady Sizemore for assignment, aborting the comeback of a former All-Star who’d been sidelined by knee, elbow and back injuries from September 2011 until this season. Sizemore hit .333 in spring training, started in center field and homered on opening day, but in 52 games he hit only .216 with two homers and 15 RBIs.

Etc.

Oakland put left-hander Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right hand, a day after he allowed a career-high eight runs in 32/3 innings in a loss to Texas. Pomeranz was called into Manager Bob Melvin’s office after Monday’s game, then met with reporters while holding a plate of food in his right hand and did not indicate anything was wrong. . . . Colorado pitcher Nick Masset was suspended three games and fined for throwing a pitch at Atlanta’s Evan Gattis Thursday. Braves reliever David Carpenter, also fined for throwing at the Rockies’ Corey Dickerson in the same game, went on the DL Tuesday with a strained right biceps. . . . The Texas Rangers, whose top four first basemen are on the DL, signed 36-year-old Carlos Pena to a minor league contract. . . . Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley underwent tests on head and neck injuries he sustained Monday against the Angels. . . . Arizona recalled right-hander Mike Bolsinger to start Tuesday in place of Bronson Arroyo, who went on the DL Monday. . . . Baltimore activated right-hander Miguel Gonzalez.
