England and France reach European Championship quarterfinals

Wayne Rooney returned from suspension Tuesday and scored on a header in the 48th minute to give England a 1-0 victory over Ukraine at Donetsk, Ukraine, and a spot in the European Championship quarterfinals.

England won Group D and will next face Italy in Kiev on Sunday.

Ukraine appeared to have evened the score in the 62nd minute when Marko Devic’s looping shot crossed the line before it was hooked clear by John Terry. But the goal was missed by the referee and his extra assistant behind the goal.

France also advanced, despite losing to Sweden, 2-0, in the other group match. Ukraine, however, will have to watch the rest of the tournament as spectators, just like co-host Poland.

Former U.S. men’s soccer team head coach Alketas “Alkis” Panagoulias has died. He was 78.

USA Soccer and the Greek Football Assn. confirmed that he died Monday.

A native of Greece, Panagoulias led the U.S. men from 1983-85, and guided the 1984 Olympic team. He later managed Greece from 1992-94.

UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay turns pro

UCLA star golfer Patrick Cantlay said he has turned pro and will make his pro debut this week at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

Cantlay, 20, runner-up in the U.S. Amateur last year, made a strong impression in 2011 playing in several PGA Tour events. He finished ninth in the Canadian Open, and shot 60 in the second round last year at the Travelers Championship, in which he finished tied for 24th.

On Sunday, Cantlay finished tied for 41st at the U.S. Open in San Francisco. He signed with Excel Sports Management, the same agency that handles Tiger Woods.

UCLA’s football team will spend the first two weeks of fall training camp at Cal State San Bernardino. First-year Coach Jim Mora is hoping that being isolated will enhance team building.

UCLA is coming off a 6-8 season. Camp is tentatively scheduled to open Aug. 4.

An allegation by a woman who says she was sexually assaulted by Kings player Drew Doughty dates to March, Hermosa Beach police said.

Sgt. Robert Higgins said the 25-year-old woman told police she met Doughty at a bar on March 1. The two went to Doughty’s home, where she turned down a proposition in front of several teammates.

They took a cab to her home, where she accused Doughty of raping her.

The woman reported the incident to police the same day.

Higgins said detectives asked her to call the hockey player while they listened, but she refused. He said that the woman has been “less than cooperative” and that the district attorney’s office and police have “found credibility problems.”

The district attorney is expected to decide by Friday whether to prosecute, he said.

The woman has hired attorney Gloria Allred to represent her.

Doughty’s attorney, Craig Renetzky, said of the case: “It is under review and we expect a decision on charges to be made within a week.”

Pat Riley, who won four of his five NBA titles as a coach with the Lakers, received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award before Game 4 of the Finals in Miami.

“The Lakers years made me,” said Riley, 67, who won 1,210 games in 24 years as a coach with the Lakers, New York Knicks and Miami Heat and is now president of the Heat. “I didn’t know what I was doing in the ‘80s, and they waited for me to become a good coach, and I thank Magic Johnson for that and Jerry West and Jerry Buss. They had tremendous patience with me the first three or four years.”
