The Philadelphia Phillies signed three-time All-Star outfielder Grady Sizemore to a minor league contract.
Sizemore batted .216 with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 15 RBIs for Boston this season before being released by the Red Sox on June 18. The Phillies assigned him to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Sizemore was an All-Star with Cleveland from 2006 to '08 and won Gold Gloves in 2007 and '08.
New York Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran has shut down his throwing program after feeling tightness in his right forearm following a session. Beltran has been limited to designated hitter duty since coming off the disabled list June 5 after missing 21 games with a bone spur in his elbow.
Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia has thrown two innings in his first simulated game since going on the disabled list in May with a knee injury.
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will have a hearing Wednesday on his appeal of a five-game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball. Machado received the suspension and an undisclosed fine on June 10 for intentionally throwing his bat onto the field in a game against the Oakland Athletics on June 8. He immediately appealed the ruling and has been playing since that time. ... The Athletics recalled outfielder Josh Reddick from the 15-day disabled list and placed first baseman Kyle Blanks on the disabled list because of a left calf strain. ... The Kansas City Royals have activated left-hander Bruce Chen from the 60-day disabled list and sent him to the bullpen in a long relief role. ... The New York Mets recalled Travis d'Arnaud after the young catcher found his hitting stroke during a two-week stint at triple-A Las Vegas.
