The opening weekend of the high school football season left one undeniable impression: The quarterback class of 2015 is loaded with talent.

While Ricky Town of Ventura St. Bonaventure is already committed to Alabama, there are plenty of others to choose from.

Josh Rosen of top-ranked Bellflower St. John Bosco completed 12 of 15 passes for 307 yards and five touchdowns Friday in a 40-7 win over Compton Dominguez.

Brady White of Newhall Hart was 37 of 48 for 442 yards and three touchdowns in a 56-49 win over Corona Santiago. His counterpart, 6-foot-4 junior Blake Barnett, had 287 yards passing and five touchdowns and also broke off an 87-yard touchdown run.

Sam Darnold, a 6-4 junior at San Clemente, ran for 92 yards and one touchdown and passed for another in his team’s 59-6 win over Long Beach Jordan.

League of the unbeaten

The Foothill League went 5-0 in nonleague games. Golden Valley ended a 17-game losing streak with a 34-28 win over Granada Hills. Saugus got 249 yards rushing from Reid Rupe in a 51-14 win over Calabasas. Chase Killingsworth of West Ranch passed for 212 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-0 win over Hawthorne.

Canyon Country Canyon had five interceptions in a 23-16 win over Westlake. Connor Wingenroth scored five touchdowns in Hart’s win over Santiago.

“It’s going to be a tough league,” said Hart Coach Mike Herrington. “Everyone is playing well.”

Watson stars

Tre Watson rushed for 274 yards and scored five touchdowns in Corona Centennial’s 60-42 win over Henderson, Nev., Liberty.

Still reeling

Turmoil at Upland didn’t help the Highlanders in a 44-13 loss to Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Two assistant football coaches were fired earlier in the week and three players were declared ineligible as the result of a joint investigation by the Southern Section and Upland Unified School District after 13 transfer students showed up.

In its loss to Canyon, Westlake was without five suspended players because of a hotel incident last week in Hawaii.

A win is a win

Oaks Christian survived 568 yards rushing by Bakersfield to win, 51-50.

Bakersfield missed a 29-yard field goal attempt with six seconds left. Arizona-bound Brandon Dawkins passed for 415 yards and six touchdowns.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” said Oaks Christian Coach Jeff Woodruff. “We have a lot of things to fix, clean up and get better. You can’t put your defense on the field for 97 snaps.”
