Friday's top high school football games

Gardena Serra plays at West Hills Chaminade in a Mission League opener. Anaheim Servite faces Santa Margarita to open Trinity League play.

Gardena Serra (4-1) at West Hills Chaminade (4-1), 7:30 p.m.: Chaminade is still trying to figure out how to beat the Cavaliers in this Mission League opener. The last two seasons, Serra has won, 35-29, in 2011 and 35-21 in 2010. So either the defense has to rise up or the offense must score more than 35 points. A 362-yard passing performance by new starting quarterback Brad Kaaya last week has Chaminade excited. But the Eagles still must find a way to deal with a Serra defensive unit that more than held its own against unbeaten Narbonne. The pick: Serra.

Anaheim Servite (2-3) vs. Santa Margarita (5-0), 7 p.m. (FoxSportsWest.com): Is there life after quarterback Johnny Stanton? The Eagles lost their senior standout to a knee injury, and junior Josh Canty or sophomore Kyle Sweet will get the first chance to run the Eagles' offense in a tough Trinity League opener. Servite's defense must be respected. The problem for the Friars is sophomore quarterback Travis Waller will have to find a way to complete some passes to win this one. The pick: Santa Margarita.

You see, Fuksion1, on average Varsity City football teams are on par with a CIF JV team. City has one or two OK teams, I guess, but the level of competition is not there.

Sd4U 1%! Crenshaw played Christian Oaks - beat them 2 weeks ago and that wasn't televised. Crenshaw and Narbonne are running the table right now across the board including CIF! Know that a lot of CIF schools recruit and have no district boudaries. Ignorant poser... GO (LA) city!

D-rave, there are no good games in the City until Crenshaw plays Narbonne and that won't happen until the two meet at the Coliseum. The City is generally horrible across the board and unwatchable.
