Sean Mannion will start for Oregon State on Saturday

Quarterback Sean Mannion will start for No. 7 Oregon State against Washington on Saturday, less than three weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Mannion missed two games after he was hurt in an Oct. 6 victory over Washington State in Seattle. The 6-foot-5 sophomore was injured on a handoff, and an MRI exam revealed the need for surgery to repair the meniscus in his knee.

Cody Vaz started in Mannion’s place and Oregon State has remained unbeaten, rising to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-12.

Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly says quarterback Everett Golson did well during a full workout and will start for the No. 5 Fighting Irish at No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Kelly said Tuesday that Golson is at 100%. Kelly benched Golson against Brigham Young last week as a precaution, saying he wanted to give him more time to recover from a concussion sustained in a helmet-to-helmet hit against Stanford.

Kelly says Golson is feeling confident heading into the game against the Sooners (5-1). Golson has struggled at times for the Irish (7-0), but Kelly says he is making progress. Kelly says Golson had his best four plays against Stanford just before he was hurt.

Kansas Coach Charlie Weis is sticking with Michael Cummings rather than Dayne Crist as the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Texas.

Idaho State football Coach Mike Kramer has been suspended for his team’s game at Montana on Saturday for violating the university’s conduct policy. The suspension came as Kramer was being investigated by the university and Pocatello police after wide receiver Derek Graves reported that Kramer shoved him to the ground during practice on Oct. 3.

Ohio State and Oregon have agreed to a home-and-home series with games to be played in 2020 in Eugene and in 2021 in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes and the Ducks have met eight times, including Rose Bowl games in 1958 and 2010, with the Buckeyes winning all eight.

Central Florida will be eligible to compete for both the Conference USA championship and a bowl game this season with its appeal of a one-year football postseason ban not scheduled to be heard until next year.

Maurkice Pouncey is expected to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ lineup Sunday, and Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman might do the same. Pouncey, an All-Pro center, will practice Wednesday after missing the game in Cincinnati Sunday because of a right knee sprain. Mendenhall (Achilles’) and Redman (ankle), who top the running back depth chart, “have a chance” of playing as well, Coach Mike Tomlin said. ... The Washington Redskins have released running back Ryan Grant and brought back running back Keiland Williams. ... Cleveland Browns President Mike Holmgren is not committing to staying the rest of the season to work with new owner Jimmy Haslam.

With the year-end top ranking out of reach, Serena Williams will settle for the title at the WTA Championships at Istanbul, Turkey. In her first match since winning the U.S. Open in September, Williams defeated Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 6-1, to start round-robin play in the season-ending event featuring the top eight players in the world. Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Petra Kvitova, 6-3, 6-2, and Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani, 6-3, 6-2, in a repeat of the French Open final. Sharapova’s win means she can still wrestle the No. 1 ranking from Victoria Azarenka, who plays Wednesday.

Sam Querrey defeated Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 7-6 (4), at the Valencia Open in Spain. Nicolas Almagro stopped Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-3, 7-6 (4), to help his chances of reaching the ATP World Tour Finals. He’ll play Querrey next.

X-rays on David Wear’s sprained right ankle were negative. UCLA is hoping that Wear, a junior forward on the men’s basketball team, will be able to return to practice by Monday.

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall will watch about the first month of the season from the bench after being diagnosed with the early stages of a stress injury to his left kneecap.

Padraig Harrington made the most of his late entry into the PGA Grand Slam of Golf with a five-under-par 66 at Southampton, Bermuda. Harrington was picked as an alternate three days ago for British Open champion Ernie Els, who has a minor ankle injury. The Irishman made seven birdies at Port Royal Golf Club to build a two-shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson in the 36-hole event for the year’s major champions.
