UCLA football still battling with injuries

Share

Another UCLA practice meant another day of triage for the Bruins.

Guard Eddie Williams did not practice, sitting out while wearing a walking boot on his right foot. Meanwhile, linebacker Patrick Larimore, who sat out the last two games because of a dislocated left shoulder, was scheduled to see a doctor Tuesday to determine the damage to the labrum.

Coach Rick Neuheisel said Williams was “resting his foot, a slight ankle sprain.” Williams said it was a “sprained foot,” an injury that “bothered me earlier in the season.”

“They treated it and it went a way for a while, but it felt real bad in the second quarter [against Oregon State on Saturday],” Williams said. “They looked at it, put a cushion on it and taped it up. It’s nothing serious.”

Losing Williams would deprive a thin offensive line of one of its better blockers. Chris Ward, a true freshman, filled in for Williams during practice.

Williams and Neuheisel said they didn’t expect the injury to prevent him from playing against Washington on Nov. 18.

Larimore, who was injured against Oregon on Oct. 21, said he did not expect to have surgery on his shoulder, preferring to let it heal on its own. That, though, will keep him out of the Washington game. Larimore said he hoped to be ready for Arizona State on Nov. 26.

Locker check

Washington quarterback Jake Locker’s availability will remain a mystery, at least until the weekend. Locker, who missed last week’s game against Oregon because of a cracked rib, will not practice until Saturday.

“We’ll then assess his situation Saturday, Sunday and Monday,” Washington Coach Steve Sarkisian said.

The Bruins have had trouble with Locker in the past. He had 92 yards rushing and threw for another 216 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-31 Bruins victory in 2007. He missed the 2008 game with a broken thumb but nearly rallied the Huskies last season, when he threw for 235 yards in 24-23 UCLA victory. Locker was moving the Huskies toward a potential winning field goal when he had a pass tipped and intercepted.

Keith Price, a redshirt freshman from Bellflower St. John Bosco, started against Oregon. He completed 14 of 28 passes for 127 yards in a 53-16 loss to the top-ranked Ducks, but, “I didn’t think we helped him out much with a bunch of dropped passes,” Sarkisian said.

Said Neuheisel: “Jake has boatloads of experience and has been in these kind of games, and been successful. But, he added, “Both are mobile guys, so I don’t see a difference in how we will approach defending their offense.”

He was injured against Washington State on Oct. 2. … Free safety Dalton Hilliard (concussion) will return to practice Wednesday, Neuheisel said. … The UCLA- USC game will start at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 and will be televised on Prime Ticket.
