Quarterbacks Matt Schaub, Matt Cassel have significant injuries

Houston quarterback Matt Schaub is out indefinitely with a “significant” right foot injury and will miss at least the Texans’ next game in two weeks.

Coach Gary Kubiak said Monday that Schaub was injured on a quarterback sneak coming out of the end zone late in the second quarter of Houston’s 37-9 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. Schaub stayed in the game, but threw only three passes.

“It’s disappointing,” Kubiak said, “but we’ll go to work and try to do the right thing by Matt.”

The Texans (7-3) have won four in a row and share the AFC’s best record with Pittsburgh heading into their bye week. Kubiak said sixth-year veteran Matt Leinart will start at Jacksonville on Nov. 27.

Leinart, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner for USC, re-signed with the Texans in the off-season after not taking a snap in 2010. He turned down other offers to return to Houston because he was comfortable with Kubiak and his offensive system.

“That’s why he’s here, that’s why he came back,” Kubiak said. “He liked this opportunity, he likes this team, he likes what we do offensively. You never know how an opportunity is going to occur, but here we go. It’s a big one for him, in his career.”

Cassel out too

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel could be lost for the season with what his coach calls a significant injury to his throwing hand.

Coach Todd Haley refused to say Monday whether the team had discussed putting Cassel on injured reserve, but he did say “it’s a possibility” when asked whether Cassel would be done for the year.

“He will probably have to have surgery at some time,” Haley said. “The length of it, we’re not sure, but there’s some optimism. Each person it varies, but it’s a difficult injury.”

Cassel hurt his right hand near the end of the Chiefs’ 17-10 loss to Denver on Sunday. The injury appeared to occur when Cassel was sacked, though Haley wasn’t sure if it was the hit or the way Cassel landed on the turf that caused it.

“This has been a fluid situation,” Haley said.

Tyler Palko played the final offensive series against Denver, leading the Chiefs to a field goal, even though Cassel said after the game that he wanted to play.

“I was a little banged up, so that’s what kept me out,” Cassel said, adding that he thought he’d be OK to play at New England next Monday night. “I wanted to go but I was told not to.”

The Chiefs (4-5) are in a three-way tie with San Diego and Denver, all chasing the AFC West-leading Oakland Raiders (5-4). The Chiefs, however, have dropped two frustrating games in a row — 31-3 to the then-winless Miami Dolphins and Sunday to the Broncos, both at Arrowhead Stadium.

Vick has broken ribs

Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick made no excuses for an awful performance, taking the blame for missing open receivers and throwing poor passes. Perhaps two broken ribs had something to do with it.

Vick broke his two lower ribs on the second play of the Eagles’ 21-17 loss to Arizona on Sunday. He didn’t tell anyone that he was hurt and played through the pain.

“He didn’t say anything, not a word. He’s a tough nut,” Coach Andy Reid said Monday. “He said he really just blanked it out and played is kind of what he said, and really didn’t think twice about it.”

Vick’s status for the next game at the New York Giants is uncertain. He missed three games last year with a rib injury.

Moreno done

The injury-marred season of Broncos tailback Knowshon Moreno came to an end after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee at Kansas City on Sunday.

Coach John Fox said surgery is planned in the near future. Moreno was hampered earlier in the season by a nagging hamstring injury that kept him out of one game and on the sideline for another.

“He’s tough-minded and he’ll battle back from it,” Fox said.

The Broncos promoted Jeremiah Johnson from the practice squad. Johnson is a second-year player out of Oregon who’s never had a carry in the NFL.

Ryan’s video

The NFL is looking into an Internet video that appears to show New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan using an obscenity while angrily responding to a fan after the team’s 37-16 loss to the New England Patriots.

The 48-second video shows the Jets walking off the field Sunday night. When Ryan appears, someone is heard yelling, “Hey, Rex, Belichick is better than you,” referring to Patriots Coach Bill Belichick. Ryan looks up and tells the fan to “shut up” while also using an obscenity. Ryan was fined $50,000 by the Jets in 2010 after he was caught on a cellphone camera giving the middle finger to a fan during a mixed martial arts event in Florida.

“I obviously, you know, made a mistake,” Ryan said Monday. “I was full of emotion and just popped off, and obviously I know I represent the National Football League and I know I represent the Jets. I know it was a mistake and I apologize. This is who I am. I made a mistake.”

Seattle Seahawks rookie right guard John Moffitt will be lost for the season after tearing ligaments in his right knee in a victory over Baltimore. Also, wide receivers Sidney Rice and Doug Baldwin and strong safety Kam Chancellor left the game because of concussions. All three were feeling better Monday, Coach Pete Carroll said, but their availability for Sunday’s game at St. Louis won’t be known until later in the week. … Cincinnati cornerback Leon Hall is out for the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon, leaving the Bengals’ secondary in flux. … Oakland running back Darren McFadden and wide receiver Jacoby Ford missed practice Monday, leaving both questionable for this weekend’s game in Minnesota.
