Baxter keeps her run going
Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley has established herself as one of the all-time great girls’ cross-country runners in state history, and she’s only a junior.
On Saturday, she set a course record at Woodward Park in Fresno in winning her third consecutive CIF state cross-country championship. She won the Division I race in 16 minutes 40 seconds for 3.1 miles. The old record was 16:43 set by Julia Stamps in 1996.
Earlier this month, Baxter set a course record at Mt. San Antonio College, winning in 16:00. She has never lost a high school race. Temecula Great Oak won the Division I girls’ team title.
In Division I boys, Juan Gonzalez of Lake Forest El Toro won the individual title in 15:05. Arcadia’s Estevan De La Rosa and Mitchell Pratt were right behind. Arcadia won the team title.
In Division II boys, Bryan Fernandez of Goleta Dos Pueblos won in 15:09. Westlake took the team title. In Division IV, Daniel De La Torre of Pasadena La Salle won in 15:30. Bellflower St. John Bosco captured the Division III title.
Saugus won Division II girls, its seventh straight state title. In Division III girls, Sydney Segal became Beverly Hills high’s first state champion, winning in 17:49. La Verne Bonita won the team title. San Juan Capistrano JSerra won the Division IV girls’ title.
