Yankees prevent White Sox from adding to lead

New York’s 4-2 victory keeps Chicago 11/2 games ahead of Minnesota in AL Central. Mariano Rivera gets his 479th save, second on all-time list.

* at New York 4, Chicago 2: Mariano Rivera picked up his 36th save to move into second place on the career list with 479 and the Yankees got a tiebreaking double from pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit in the seventh inning. The White Sox stayed 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Minnesota in the American League Central.

* at Cleveland 3, Minnesota 1: Scott Lewis (2-0) pitched six shutout innings in his second career start to lead the Indians. Lewis has not given up a run in 14 innings since being called up from the minors Sept. 7, the longest scoreless streak by an Indians pitcher to start a career since 1969.

* at Texas 11, Detroit 8: Rookie Taylor Teagarden hit his first grand slam and had a career-high five runs batted in, and Michael Young hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning for the Rangers.

* at Kansas City 3, Seattle 0: Kyle Davies (7-7) matched a career high with eight strikeouts in eight innings.

* Boston 13, at Tampa Bay 5: The Red Sox hit six home runs and climbed to within .002 percentage points of the AL East-leading Rays.
