Angels overcome injury to Jered Weaver, beat Blue Jays, 5-2

KEY MOMENT: With the score tied, 2-2, and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Josh Hamilton lofted a fly ball to shallow center that didn’t appear deep enough to score Kole Calhoun from third. But when Blue Jays center fielder Colby Rasmus made a flat-footed catch, Calhoun broke for home and scored the go-ahead run.

AT THE PLATE: Albert Pujols took a mighty hack at a 3-1 pitch in the fifth and blooped a score-tying RBI single to shallow right-center, giving him eight hits in his last 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Howie Kendrick had three hits, including an RBI single in the fifth, and has 11 hits in his last 19 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Erick Aybar capped the four-run fifth with an RBI double. Chris Iannetta had a double and two singles and scored twice.

ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Joe Thatcher, in his second appearance since he was acquired from Arizona on Saturday, retired both batters he faced, Adam Lind on a fly to center to end the sixth and Dioner Navarro on a grounder to second to start the seventh. Jason Grilli retired the final two batters of the seventh, Kevin Jepsen worked a scoreless eighth, and Joe Smith threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save.

NOT LEFT OUT: Calhoun, who has shared right field with Collin Cowgill, made his first start against a left-hander since May 31 and doubled and walked in three plate appearances against Toronto starter J.A. Happ. Calhoun is batting .369 with 31 runs in 32 games since May 29.

QUOTABLE: Reliever Mike Morin on his diving catch of popup that squirted out of C.J. Cron’s glove when the first baseman collided with catcher Hank Conger in front of the mound Sunday against Houston: “It was cool, but it was not planned by any means. I was not anticipating them colliding and the ball dropping. It was just reaction. It’s better to be lucky than good, right?”
