Angels defeat Diamondbacks in spring training, 3-2

AT THE PLATE: The Angels took advantage of wild pick-off attempts to score their first two runs. Leadoff man Kole Calhoun, who drew two walks, took third base on Eury De La Rosa’s errant throw past first base and scored on J.B. Shuck’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Shuck took third on Marcos Mateo’s errant throw to first and scored on John Hester’s two-out bunt single in the eighth.

ON THE MOUND: Closer Ernesto Frieri, whose wife gave birth Friday to the couple’s second child, threw a one-two-three fourth inning in his spring debut. Matt Shoemaker threw two scoreless innings to earn the victory, and Corey Rasmus and Nick Maronde each pitched scoreless innings. Josh Wall gave up two runs in the ninth but struck out Brandon Jacobs with a man on second to end the game.

EXTRA BASES: Andrew Romine, who is battling John McDonald for a utility infield spot, drove in the Angels’ third run with a sharp single to center field in the ninth. McDonald made a nice play in the fourth, charging Paul Goldschmidt’s grounder, fielding it with his bare hand and throwing to first for the out. … Collin Cowgill had a double and a bunt single for the Angels.
