Angels find offense in 6-4 win over Indians

KEY MOMENT: The Indians had gotten out of the fifth inning with a 2-0 deficit when J.B. Shuck grounded into a double play, or had they? As Angels Manager Mike Scioscia challenged the call, three of the Cleveland players left the field anyway, and pitcher Corey Kluber just stood there for a couple of minutes, not playing catch or doing anything else. Scioscia won the challenge, with Shuck ruled to have beaten a relay throw to first base. Kluber took the mound again, only to walk Collin Cowgill and give up a two-run single to Howie Kendrick. The Angels led, 4-0, and had two extra runs in a game they won by two runs.

AT THE PLATE: Erick Aybar had his second four-hit game in five days, and he has lifted his batting average from .175 on April 20 to .292 on April 30. David Freese had two hits, the first time this season he has had consecutive multi-hit games. He is batting .188. “David Freese doesn’t have to work his way into the lineup,” Scioscia said. “He is going to get his at-bats. He’s our third baseman.”

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver threw five scoreless innings, mixing pitches from 67 to 86 mph, before giving up four consecutive hits and leaving in the sixth inning. He gave up two runs over 51/3 innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. Nick Maronde, the Angels’ lone left-handed reliever, came in to face Carlos Santana in the seventh inning and walked home a run on four pitches.

ON THE LINEUP: Kendrick was the Angels’ latest leadoff hitter, their third in three games and fourth in five games. Kendrick, who was the cleanup hitter Monday, batted leadoff for the first time in four years. The Angels have used Kendrick, Aybar, Shuck and Cowgill in the leadoff spot since Kole Calhoun went on the disabled list April 17. The Angels are 3-7 when Calhoun leads off and 10-6 when he does not.

EXTRA BASES: Angel Stadium was hit with gusts of 60 mph Tuesday afternoon, and some flags ripped. As a result, the Angels took down every flag but the U.S. one before Tuesday night’s game.
